Proper Lifting Techniques

Did you know?

  • More than 1 Million workers suffer from back injuries each year while on the job.
  • 4 out of 5 back injuries are injuries to the lower back – most occurring while lifting.
  • 1 out of 5 work place injuries involve some type of back injury.
  • Almost all back injuries are completely preventable through the use of proper lifting techniques.
  • There are a variety of injuries that can happen to the back, some of which are serious enough to require surgery or possibly lead to permanent disability.

To Prevent back injuries, always follow these proper lifting techniques:

  1. Size up the load – ask for help if the object is too heavy to lift alone
  2. Always keep your feet shoulder width apart – it ensures balance
  3. Bend at your knees and keep your back straight
  4. Grip the load with the palms of your hands and fingers
  5. Lift straight up and let your legs do the work – not your back
  6. Do not twist or turn your body, change direction with your feet
  7. Always ensure you have a clear path to carry the load
  8. Set the load down properly, the same way you picked it up
  9. Always push, not pull objects on a cart or dolly
  10. If it’s a long or awkward load, ask for help
  11. Split the load into smaller loads if possible
